GROTTARI or POTHOLING?!
Last Friday, during the lecture to the CAI, Fricu us entertained for two hours explaining interesting numerous research activities are carried out to the cave of Rio Martino, in that of Crissolo. During class, I was struck by his phrase "the difference between going in caves and caving to make is that the caving in addition to the pure physical activity, sport, use the brain ..."
That simple phrase, in one like me who has done his studies of science in the last 15 years could not do anything but turn on a light bulb, find out how the activities can be carried out, and do not expect someone else who is willing and time for them was a revelation: hydrology, fluid dynamics, microclimatologia, bio-caving, geo-chemical dating, there is plenty ... of choice, and opportunities for physicists, chemists, geologists, biologists, DEPARTMENT or enthusiast are endless.
Then another discovery: that Giovanni Badino that appears in most of the stories and adventures of the cave that is just take care that, during the course of Physics back in 1998, to explain the angular momentum, spin was pulling our university books in the middle of the classroom ... of course if they are not crazy caving groups do not take them, eh? (Or will it be a result of long hours in the dark? ^ _ ^)
The fact remains that at last, between Friday and Sunday, I really understood why I chose this course: why are so many, and I'd know, among cavers who read this blog, what was the impetus for each of you, the spring that makes you calarvi the depths of the mountains, cold and soaked in water and mud for a good number of hours? First
aspects are more immediate physical activity in a healthy, healthy sport aerobics, good for improving strength and elasticity of a physicist too used to press the buttons on a PC, and the possibility of get through this activity, places to see, incredible structures and buildings, discovering how the incessant activity of water can lead, depending on its conditions of full or dripping, the creation of vast halls or the birth of real stone carvings, the hair of an angel, as stalagmites and stalactites, the eccentric that we all have learned to recognize and appreciate ...
And here come into play other aspects that I believe can lead a person to undertake this activity (or at least those that apply to me).
I think that caving can become the perfect paradigm of soul-searching: the desire to dig deeper, to want to get down to the depths, to test their physical skills but also their nerves, their ability to maintain the blood cool and calm even in situations potentially "scary", they represent in a sense to want to talk out their fears, to expose and learn to live with them. This is fantastic, and I saw it good or bad to all of us who had faced the fear of emptiness, we jumped at the foot of and was able to overcome any ... well, who was uncomfortable in the bottleneck is managed to get out better or worse, ask your nerves (I noticed at my expense, the only time I created a bottleneck problems, to Benes, was probably because the fatigue and hurry me want to quit "messed up" the nerves, and only when, thanks to Armando, I managed to find the quiet, I could share) ...
I believe that each of us can learn important lessons down there: do you realize how important it is to be truly "present" to every situation, be able to stop, slow down their pace, leaving a bit 'from the frenzied race to which we are now used in everyday life. When you enter the cave, leave it all out, just you, the rope, tools, and the cave ... total trust in you, but especially in equipment, and the cave itself: you know you can do very little in front of ' grandeur of the creations of a miserable drop of water, you see what I was able to take over hundreds of thousands of years ... and you stop, estereffatto and fascinated, but also aware that very little, compared to power ... and then started again, with another point of view on the world ...
course, it is said that all share in what I wrote: For many, the cave is a way to test themselves physically, without thinking about anything else ... I'm just wondering, when you happen to be there, to make a little experiment, which yesterday opened my eyes ...
When you are alone, perhaps in the midst of a well, when in front of you will be far behind and there is still no one in sight, try allong or block with a key along the wall, turn off the LEDs and the acetylene and listen: Take 5 minutes (not much, trust me) for asoltare and to "see" ... Then she told me (do, really). It 's a very new feeling, very different from turning off the light in your room: you realize you really be yourself, no matter how much you are away from the group, you are to deal only with itself, with the sound of silence (I assure you that it can be stronger than a brass band) and with the light of the dark (keep your eyes open, I would recommend for me ...)... it was wonderful, although I admit that turn the light was initially a relief, but I think this I'll just make as soon as possible ...
Now stop or I take a fool ... I look forward to your comments ... see you soon, then maybe in a cave!
Slan!
